Halloween is right around the corner and, I know a lot of people couldn't be more excited about it. Growing up, Halloween has never been one of my favorite holidays, because of the scary aspect of it but, I did enjoy grabbing candy and dressing up as either an angel or a princess every year. As I've gotten older, I've realized some things and, I thought that it would be cool for me to share them with you all just to keep you guys on your toes this Spooky Season. Therefore, this post is dedicated to things you all should keep in the back of your mind for Halloween!
1. Check your candy or your sibling's candy
I know I sound a bit like a mom but, I want to remind you all that we don't live in a perfect world and, people will give anything to you, especially to kids. Make sure you check your candy, your child's, and your siblings, better safe than sorry!
2. Don't sexually assault someone based off of their costume
Unfortunately, we live in a world where this has to be reminded 25/8. I want to let y'all in on something... you guys don't have to over sexualize everything. Please don't take a woman or a man wearing a costume as an excuse to allow you to assault and/or harass them. And this goes to my next piece of advice.
3. You can wear WHATEVER you want
Please don't slut-shame or judge someone based on their costume. If you do this, you must be a bored human being with a lot of time on your hands. Have fun and enjoy yourself, don't call a woman a whore because her costume is revealing her stomach and some of her chest. Don't stalk a man all night because his costume makes him look good. Everyone's here for a good time. At the end of the day, you all can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. If you want to show off some skin, FLAUNT THAT SHIT!
4. Don't drink and drive
I know this is common sense, but some people lack common knowledge. If you plan on going out on Halloween and you have the expectations of drinking, please do NOT drive. You're putting too much at risk by doing so. It doesn't hurt ordering an uber or having a Designated Driver.
5. Don't go out by yourself
Say, for example, you're going to a Halloween party and you don't have anyone to go with, see if some people from your classes are going to those same parties as you. Ask some members from the organization you're in (if you're in an organization). If you live on campus, befriend your neighbors and ask them. Also, think about if you asked your roommates to go. Just don't travel by yourself.
6. Don't disrespect anyone's culture
Blackface isn't a costume. Dressing up as a Native American and trying to be funny isn't a costume. You can still pretend to be LeBron James for Halloween without painting blackface. When people tell you not to do this, they're not just saying it, it's extremely offensive to someone's culture. So, to my European American's out there, you can have fun this Halloween, just not pretending to look like me.
7. Be safe and have fun
Make sure you guys are in a safe environment and, you're with good people. Don't forget my tips and make sure you guys have fun! To my college kids, be safe, party it up and, don't let the night end. To the little ones, have a very Happy Halloween, be safe, and get all the candy you can!
